Institute of Materials, Minerals & Mining
The boilerhouse was converted into the Grantham offices for the IOM, the Institute of Materials, Minerals and Mining.
Following a recent IOM initiative to involve designers with the Institute to stimulate innovation for British industry we were tasked with making the building renovations appealing to the design community.
We added a mezzanine floor to accommodate offices upstairs while public rooms for conferences and seminars fill the ground floor.
We kept the industrial chic of the building with exposed inflated air distribution in red fabric tubes and exposed conduit and cabling.
We lifted the appearance of the building's exterior by adding cladding.
Many of the materials used in the building were donated by members of the institute so were a given when we started, such as the cladding, sliding glass walls and tiling.
