The University of Cambridge, Murray Edwards College

Murray Edwards was built in 1962-4 and was designed by Chamberlin Powell and Bon – architects for the Barbican, London.  It is Grade ll * Listed.
The brief was to upgrade services while refurbishing several prominent rooms including The Fellows Drawing Room, the Senior Combination Room, Fellows Rooms and the corridors. A sympathetic solution was required to conceal new services against the exposed concrete soffits of the building.
Improvements included:  a radiant heat panel and lighting are incorporated into a dropped ceiling structure, bookcases are designed to house future pipework, and a picture hanging system was introduced to enable a changing exhibition of the college’s prominent collection of artwork and further fixing and damage to existing brick walls. Original furniture was reupholstered and custom textiles and rugs were introduced to complement existing furniture and artwork.
